Nominating Committee

Overview

The Nominating Committee has three crucial functions within FUUCA. We take responsibility for:

  • recruiting, training and sustaining church leaders;
  • educating the congregation about the nomination/leadership process;
  • preparing a slate of candidates to fill positions of responsibility within the church.

The nominating committee’s covenant and goals guide our actions.

Nominating

The nominating committee entered this year’s nominating season with two key goals: To identify the best fit for the leadership needs of our church and to ensure transparency and confidentiality throughout our process.

Identifying Leadership Candidates

It is a challenge to identify the best fit between the church members who step forward and the leadership needs of our church. This year, we asked several candidates applying for one position to consider another. It speaks to the dedication and flexibility of our congregation that three said yes.

Unfortunately, we were unable to find anyone willing to take on the role of committee chair for Stewardship. If you desire to help our church by serving as chair of this committee, please contact anyone on the nominating committee for an application and you will be interviewed.

Transparency and Confidentiality

Our congregation delegates the authority to run our church to the board. That authority is later delegated to our executive team and then to committee chairs. By using a process which is easily understood and followed, we ensure confidence in our leadership.

The nominating process is documented and is available HERE. We are always open to suggestions for improvement. The flipside of transparency is confidentiality. Our deliberations are confidential, as are the names of candidates who weren’t chosen.

Changes Incorporated This Year

The 2011 nominating season was different from past years in three significant ways.

  • Per a recent change, most committee chairs report to the executive team, not to the board. Nominees for these committee chairs positions were submitted to the executive team, who appoint will them for the 2011/2012 church year. In the past, the board appointed these committee chairs.
  • Traditionally, the Nominating Committee has included subcommittee chairs in our slate. This year, the Nominating Committee chose to focus on primary committees and board members.
  • In order to better prepare the incoming committee chairs, the nominating/leadership development committee developed a comprehensive committee chair training. A key element of this undertaking was the creation of a leadership reference guide which will, over the course of time, be expanded to included much of the technical information that a committee chair will need to know.

The UUA and our own SW District both offer upcoming leadership training events.
