A Global Stocktake is happening, more countries are signing the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty, and a free award-winning K-12 educational resource.<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Here are the highlights \u2013 and lowlights \u2013 so far.
<\/strong>The latest\u00a0draft<\/a><\/span>\u00a0calls on countries to \u201ctake further action in this critical decade towards\u201d either: 1) \u201cA phase out of fossil fuels in line with\u00a0<\/strong>best available science,”<\/strong>\u00a02)\u00a0\u201dPhasing out of fossil fuels in line with best available science, the IPCC\u2019s 1.5 pathways and the principles and provisions of the Paris Agreement,\u201d 3)\u00a0\u201cA phase-out of unabated fossil fuels<\/strong>\u00a0recognizing the need for a peak in their consumption in this decade and underlining the importance for the energy sector to be predominantly free of fossil fuels well ahead of 2050,\u201d 4)\u00a0<\/strong>\u201cPhasing out\u00a0unabated fossil fuels and to rapidly reducing their use<\/strong>\u00a0so as to achieve net-zero CO2 in energy systems by or around mid-century,\u201d or 5) leaving out language on the future use of fossil fuels.<\/p>\n

As I\u00a0talk about here<\/a><\/span>,\u00a0\u201cunabated\u201d is what I refer to as a weasel word<\/strong>: it allows fossil fuel producers to weasel out of reductions by promising to capture their carbon at some time in the future (and when they get to that time,\u00a0they\u2019ll most likely claim it was too expensive\/too hard<\/strong>\u00a0to do what they promised). So as you can imagine, the precise language to be included on future fossil fuel use is\u00a0the most contentious issue at COP28 right now.\u00a0<\/strong>And make no mistake, it is\u00a0a huge fight.
