STARMUS science festival<\/strong><\/span>.<\/a>\u00a0Co-founded by musician\u00a0Brian May<\/a><\/strong><\/span>\u00a0and astrophysicist\u00a0Garik Israelian<\/a><\/strong><\/span>, the festival usually features astronauts and Nobel prize-winners talking about physics and the universe.\u00a0This year, though, the festival was titled\u00a0“The Future Of Our Home Planet\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0and included talks by Ukrainian climate scientist\u00a0Svitlana Krakovska<\/a><\/strong><\/span>, paleoclimatologist\u00a0Mo Raymo<\/a><\/strong><\/span>, environmental economist\u00a0Nate Keohane<\/a><\/strong><\/span>, marine biologist\u00a0Sylvia Earle<\/a><\/strong><\/span>, Animal Scientist, Jane Goodall and many more.<\/div>\n

This year, the festival was held in Slovakia, a country that just\u00a0last month\u00a0phased out its last coal-fired power plant<\/a><\/span>,\u00a0<\/strong>the Vojany power station in the eastern district of Michalovce. The phase-out was expected to be completed at the end of the decade, but the country\u00a0pushed forward the deadline to 2024.<\/strong>\u00a0Slovakia now joins the ranks of other coal-free European countries, a list that includes Austria, Belgium, Portugal, and Sweden. Slovensk\u00e9 elektr\u00e1rne, the company that owns the shuttered plant, plans to devote the space to a\u00a0solar park or battery storage in the future.<\/strong><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
