Steps for membership at First UU of Austin:
Attend a “Getting to Know UU” class (recommended, but optional). This informal class is a good way to learn more about Unitarian Universalism and this church. Sign up for the class at the Membership/Visitor’s table in the foyer on any Sunday morning or email email@example.com. The class is offered every other month and is always on a Sunday from 12:15pm to 1:15pm. Childcare is provided. The 2017 dates are: February 12, April 9, June 11, August 20, October 8, and December 10.
Attend a “Path to Membership” class. This class allows you to meet other prospective members, learn about Unitarian Universalist history and principles, hear from the senior minister about about the church covenant and responsibilities of membership, and learn about ways to get connected in the church. If you have been a member at a UU church before, this class isn’t required, but is still highly encouraged. To RSVP, sign up for the class at the Membership/Visitors’ table in the foyer on any Sunday morning or email firstname.lastname@example.org. The class is offered quarterly and is always on a Saturday from 9am to 12pm. Childcare and breakfast is included. The 2017 dates are: January 28, April 22, July 29, and November 18. Please RSVP at least one week prior.
Complete the new member paperwork. Upon joining, new members complete a new member info form, an interest sheet, and a pledge form (on which you can estimate your financial commitment to First UU, for the church to use for budgeting purposes).
Sign the Membership Book. This historical document is signed by all who join First UU Austin. Each new member signs the book individually. After signing the book, you are a member of First UU. To be a full voting member, you must also make a contribution of record (unless you’ve already contributed within the prior year and had it attributed to you).
New member name tag. New members are identified with a red ribbon attached to their name tag (if you don’t already have a name tag, let us know). This ribbon is a great way for First UU members to recognize you as a new member. You may remove this ribbon whenever you wish. You can conveniently store your name tag on the carousels in the foyer.
Attend a new member potluck. You will receive a personal invitation to a biannual new member potluck dinner, which is a great way to meet and visit with other new members, ministers, members of the board and other church members. The 2017 dates are April 29 and December 9.
Attend the new member recognition ceremony. You will receive a personal invitation to this ceremony where members are introduced to and welcomed by the congregation during the Sunday service at both the 9:15 am and the 10:45 am services. These ceremonies are held quarterly. The 2017 dates are February 5, May 7, August 13, and December 10.
Get connected! According to the interests that you indicated on the new member interest sheet, you will be contacted by the chairs of relevant committees. If you request it, we can also pair you with a First UU member (compadre) who will help show you around First UU.
